History of Valentine's Day

The ancient Romans celebrated a festive time on February 15, the Feast of Lupercal or Lupercalia. This was a happy revel in sensuality and worship of the god of fertility, Lupercus, often associated with Pan, another Roman god of revelry.

In Rome in the 5th century Pope Gerasius outlawed the pagan Lupercalian rites and substituted a new festival dedicated to the martyred St. Valentine. Gerasius hoped that people would try to emulate the saints in their daily lives, but the more romantic aspects of Valentine's life and death were what captivated people.

Bishop Valentine had been executed for helping people marry against the wishes of the mad emperor Claudius. Valentine, while in prison, had fallen in love with the daughter of the prison warden, and signed his last letter to her "From Your Valentine". There is also a legend that Valentine cured his inamorata of blindness.
