KJL's Pre-Columbian Man Pendant
Here's a fun, historically accurate pendant. All the favorite gem colors in a pendant modeled after ancient pre-Columbian statues (Mayan? Aztec?). Some Prehistoric Pieces for that Natural Look
I designed this necklace with many interesting pieces including the tapered centerpiece, which is around 12,000 years old, and is a piece of mammoth ivory from Alaska. This design is KJL's reproduction of a prehistoric Mayan artifact. The original was hand-carved from black onyx in the 9th Century AD. Pearls in Memory of Audrey Hepburn IN STOCK

Kenneth knew Audrey Hepburn, the charming star of Breakfast at Tiffany's and so many other fine films, and you can tell by this design that he greatly admired her. This neck ornament he designed in her memory features 5 rows of large knotted pearls fastened by an outrageously sparkling diamante floral decoration. Each of the 5 pearl strands graduates in length so that the necklace always fits perfectly with no buckling, ruffling, or "rollover". The crystal centerpiece, a complex interweaving of curved and petal shapes, seems to resemble a peony in full flower. It is 2.5 inches in diameter, and is far more brilliant, breathtaking, and diamond-like than I can capture in the photo. The shortest pearl strand is 16 inches. Marella Agnelli Necklace
Marella Agnelli, married to Gianni Agnelli 1954-2003, loved her Kenneth Jay Lane necklaces which she wore in multiples attached via the golden twist-clasp. I think she wears four (or six?) of the necklaces in the photo. The design reminds me of ruby, emerald and pearl precious stone necklaces treasured by wealthy women in India. I heard Signora Agnelli is out of sorts that KJL added this lovely piece to his couture line. Her late husband Gianni, was an Italian industrialist and principal shareholder of Fiat. As the head of Fiat, he oversaw 4.4% of Italy's GNP, 3.1% of its industrial workforce, and 16.5% of its industrial investments in research. Nicknamed l'Avvocato (the lawyer) because he graduated in law (though he was never admitted to the Order of Lawyers), Agnelli represented the most important figure in Italian economy, the symbol of capitalism during all the second half of 20th century, and regarded by many as the true "king of Italy".
A cultivated man of keen intelligence and a peculiar sense of humour, he was perhaps the most famous Italian abroad, forming deep relationships with international bankers and politicians (some of them became close friends, like Henry Kissinger). He was considered by some to be an elegant man. Wonder what he would have thought about the Fiat-Chrysler merger? He left his extraordary paintings to the town of Turin in 2002. Agnelli didn't allow his November 19, 1953 marriage to Marella Caracciolo - a half-American, half-Neapolitan aristocrat who made a small but significant name as a furniture designer - from having affairs with socialite Pamela Harriman, film star Anita Ekberg, among numerous other ladies (his pals included Rita Hayworth and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, although there is no proof he was intimate with them.) Pearl Madness
Queen Elizabeth I was pearl-crazy. Some think she did away with Mary in order to get her hands on Mary's pearls. Audrey Hepburn was crazy about pearls too. Gold Pendant Antique Inca Find--NOT FOR SALE
This is a priceless gold pendant from a Peruvian dig, it was made ca. 900-1100 A.D. and comes from the Sican culture which was older than the Inca civilization. It is about 5" square. We are showing it because KJL was inspired by it or something like it to create his Peruvian sculpture. We don't own it. It is in a museum along with thousands of other artifacts discovered in a burial site near Lima, Peru. For further information, see Scientific American April 1994.
Gold Pendant by Kenneth Jay Lane IN STOCK
Here is a one of a kind primitive style pendant created by KJL in the 1980s. It is 3-dimensional; you can add it to a scarf, a strand of beads, silk cord, etc. I show it with a silk organza scarf drawn through the loop at the top. The expression on his face is amazing. I would also use spiny oyster or variscite beads as a accompaniment since they have the wonderful "rough" cut look you want to balance the complexity and interest of this pendant. Minimalism is DEAD!
The idea of Zen minimalism is dead, Giunta said. We need so many things to function in our daily lives that to carry on that idea in fashion with a disregard for all the extras is kind of a dying battle. Sure, you can have yoga, but it’s just one part of your day, it’s not your whole mentality.Mr. Lane agreed. I didn’t like minimalism, he said. I said on QVC once in those days, How can we have minimalism?
Girls can’t eat, they can’t smoke, they have to have safe sex and minimalism all at the same time? Where is the fun?
Jewelry should be fun. That’s really the idea of jewelry, not only for fashion and a look—it’s an amusement for women.
Even the stuffiest European houses seem to agree: For spring 2009, Prada, Louis Vuitton and Balenciaga boldly over-accessorized
their collections with colorful faux gemstones and plastics.
When I was young, women wore hats, said Mr. Lane, who is 78. They wore gloves, they wore combs with little flowers in their hair, all that sort of thing, and they enjoyed doing it. I’m not talking about only the most fashionable women, you know—secretaries, et cetera! Today, it’s all sort of pared down, and really the most amusing accessory they can put on is jewelry. And shoes. Women love shoes, as you know.
But could it be, mercifully, that jewelry is at last replacing shoes as the accessory du jour? As the introduction to Mr. Lane’s book, Faking It, puts it: Faux jewelry is like wearing glass slippers. A woman can feel like she’s going to the ball, even if she’s not.

| A stunning design by Kenneth from a 17th Century French model by Gilles L'Egare, jeweller to royalty. During the 16th to 18th Centuries, jewelry took on secular importance and moved out of the Church and into the ballroom. The original model for this design shown above is in a jewelry sketchbook published by Gilles L'Egare in Paris around 1663. The centerpiece of the necklace measures 3.5" x 2.5" and is lavishly inlaid with brilliant rhinestones in a feminine floral arrangement. The clip eardrops appear delicate and are very lightweight, about 1.25" high. The central ornament of the necklace is held by 4 rows of faceted jet glass fire polish beads ending in a brilliant 5-crystal bar. The necklace is adjustable from 12" to 16". Who is Kenneth Jay Lane?
Kenneth Jay Lane has had a starstudded career as a designer of jewelry, accessories, and as an interpreter of the taste and trends of the times. He has exercised his creative imagination to its fullest since 1963 when he started out in New York City selling his bracelets on the street in the fashion district. He knows many socialites, movers and shakers, and international celebrities, and has designed for them and with them in mind. Yet his creations are accessible to everyone. His book Faking It tells his story.
