Beads by Mail was founded in the owner's head as a child when she became fascinated with jewelry. It was many years and many failed attempts at other careers before Jane was able to establish her passion for beads and jewelry design as a business on the Internet.
When I met Kenneth Jay Lane and saw his unbelievable designs and creative genius, I knew I wanted to make his wonderful pieces available to everyone! Now, after 10 years, Kenneth Jay Lane Sales (kennethjaylanesales.com) is a recognized and popular source for KJL’s couture jewelry. Our business began 23 years ago in a tiny jewelry design boutique in Boston's historic Back Bay neighborhood. At that time I didn't realize I was a beadaholic -- there was no such word. But who else would invest in inventory and display fixtures, as well as precious space, without even knowing whether beads would sell? No one else in Boston was selling loose beads. I decided if they didn't sell, I would keep them for myself. That's a beadaholic.
Luckily, beads sold very well. I hung a one-of-a-kind bead curtain in a front window that pulled bead lovers and other creative types into the store. In the early 1990s we published our first full-color bead catalog.
We soon realized that our now larger audience of beadaholics from almost every state in the US was hungry for more information and learning about beads. Our next bead catalog, also in full color, was triple the size of the previous bead catalog, with more background information. We still didn't have enough room in the catalog to discuss everything we wanted to about the fascinating lore of gemstone and glass beads.
Meanwhile, we gained increasingly more knowledge and expertise about all kinds of beads. A dedicated crew of bead vendors from Zaire, Bombay, Beijing, Czechoslovakia, Turkey, and other exotic bead centers visited often. They educated us while they spread out their exciting collections in all their colorful glory for us to study and acquire. Although that pioneering little shop closed years ago, we found a wider international audience thanks to the Internet. Now Beads by Mail and Kenneth Jay Lane Sales are known for the honesty, integrity, and high quality of the fashion jewelry, beads and components offered.
